FRIDAY

Last Friday I was lucky to be starting my spring break, but this Friday marked the beginning of the end for our household. We started our morning slowly together with some delicious eggs, green smoothies, and coffee. My husband had to see clients that afternoon, so we were able to squeeze in a quick round of tennis before duty called his name, and a nap called mine :) I also got a fair amount of work done on the blog and some browsing (but no purchasing) at a local thrift store. Knowing that we had plans for the remainder of the weekend, we decided to have a nice and quiet dinner in—a dinner that might not appear to be the most fabulous in the picture below but more than satisfied our mutual cravings for sauerkraut.

SATURDAY

I was lucky enough to naturally wake up early on Saturday morning and get in some quality blog work before my fun and therefore distracting roomie woke up to join me for coffee and breakfast. We watched a couple of episodes of House of Cards on Netflix before he left for work (do you see a pattern here—hint: I’m the lucky one), and I made the mistake of watching one episode of “Inside a Killer’s Mind”. BIG MISTAKE as I would find later on Saturday night.  Late that afternoon we met up with some friends for a round of disc golf—my first and majorly embarrassing round to be more specific. After the sun set and our game came to an end, we stopped at a Mexican restaurant where Joe and I opted not to share entrees so that we could live on leftovers the rest of the weekend. Newbie disc golf must be exhausting because I fell asleep sitting up in bed with all the lights in the room on within 10 minutes of arriving home. How am I going to go back to work on Monday?!?!?!

SUNDAY

I woke up early again on Sunday, but rather than working, I used this time to do more important things–like watch Golden Girls reruns :) I did finally crawl off the couch to complete some work and do some yoga before settling back on it to catch up on March Madness. As us piggies had planned while dining out on Saturday, we ate leftovers for lunch on Sunday (I was actually able to stretch mine into lunch AND dinner because I am a delicate little lady). My Joe decided to attempt a home hair cut—not a buzz cut folks, a real hair cut—and enlisted me as his trusty assistant.  Then he fired me. Then he rehired me to even out the back. It was somewhat of an ordeal but overall entertaining and a learning experience. Better his hair than mine. Mwahahahahahaha! The rest of Sunday was very low key and used to catch up on cleaning, cooking, and work tasks before I re-enter the real world.

It was nice to have a low cost and low key weekend after I had spent last weekend traveling. I especially needed the prep and rest time to get ready to head back to work. I love my job, but how many more days until summer?!?

How did you save money this past weekend? Does anyone have any tips on not sucking at disc golf?

FRIDAY

Friday afternoon marked the beginning of my spring break (perks of working in the school system), and I spent most of my day in the car headed to San Diego for a weekend bachelorette party.  Some of the girls that had arrived earlier in the day made a grocery trip to stock the house with snacks, drinks, and appetizers to keep us hydrated and full between our meals and adventures.  Knowing this, I packed some fruit, almonds, beef jerky, and coconut water to tide over my tummy while driving and chipped in for the weekend’s supplies when I arrived at the house just before I started enjoying them. Friday was our night in to shower the bride-to-be with gifts as we all got to know each other, so as far as limiting my spending goes, it was a success—much cheaper than hitting bars or a restaurant.

SATURDAY

We had planned on heading out for brunch on Saturday morning, but in typical vacation fashion we got a late start and didn’t have time to squeeze it in before our 12:00 lunch reservation. Our amazing trip organizer made a reservation at Ballast Point brewery—which had the most reasonable beer prices I have EVER seen in my life, EVER—where we ate lunch and tasted some seriously delicious brews before finding our favorites. Following lunch we toured the brewery (free!), and because we were enjoying ourselves so much, we decided to stick around for a couple of hours before heading back to the beach house. While I did skip purchasing any Ballast Point gear from their souvenir shop, I did get a big ol’ can of their Thai Chili White Wahoo for my husband.  Once we got home we ate some snacks then thought we’d check out the neighborhood for some dinner spots. Being the old broads that we are, we struck out and were unimpressed with the “scene”, so we opted to order some pizza as we were on our way home.  I fell asleep as we were waiting for the WORST PIZZA DELIVERY EVER—no shame.

SUNDAY

Sunday morning we did make it to brunch—at which I ordered a bombtastic egg sandwich and saved half to tide me over during mealtimes later that day.  I also forgot to grab my sunglasses on my way out of the house that morning and browsed some shops to see if I could find a cheap pair that could tide me over for the next couple of hours but passed. They were all cheaper than their price tags, and you all know my feelings on wasting money. Squinty brunch, here I come! A few of us spent the rest of the morning catching some rays on the beach before making our way to Stone Brewery for a lunch/dinner combo and more beer (seeing a pattern here?). I was able to order one of the cheapest entrees on the menu—yeah I said it—because of the leftover brunch I strategically saved earlier in the day. We had a little time to enjoy the scenery and peruse the gift shop (you know I walked away empty handed) before heading back to the beach for a sunset bonfire to round out the weekend.  I couldn’t ask for a better send off than smores :)

I was a little late on getting this Weekend Survival Guide out, but hey—a bachelorette party and 5.5 hours of solo driving will do that to you. Being as it is humpday, this can serve as a wonderful reminder that “next” weekend is only a few days away :) I was able to pay for nearly my entire trip’s expenses without spending much above my regular allotted cash amounts by consciously not spending my designated “spending money” from my previous two pay periods. It took a little planning ahead before I left and some reorganization once I got back (because I used my debit card when splitting group meals), but to me it is worth saving that $110.00—especially when I’ve got some gift giving expenses in my near future (woohoo to exciting life events!)

*The cost of staying at the beach house was paid for months in advance and not included in my weekend spending totals. Eight people had their own bed in a house that was within walking distance to the beach for just $150 (check in Friday and checkout Monday) for the entire weekend. That’s what we call Fun on a Budget 😉

FRIDAY

I spent way too much of my brain space thinking about kimchi on Friday afternoon, so following the end of the workweek, I decided to forego cooking dinner myself and went out for Korean with my better half. Even though part of me wanted a beer, I drank water instead—predicting that a post-dinner dessert stop being the culprit of my extra calories and spending. I’m glad I made that choice because we hit up a new neighborhood Fro-yo joint to satisfy that sweet tooth. I give both spots two thumbs up and appreciated the break from cooking and cleaning after a long work week :) Now that we share all of our money, we decided to dedicate a specific amount of cash each month to pay for our joint date-ish activities, so that’s how we paid for our full bellies on Friday.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for...froyo.

SATURDAY

Saturday was an errand day and couch night—50% how I like it, no shame in my game! I woke up early to get back into my blogging routine (funnily enough a post about routines is coming your way soon) by posting a new Saturday Morning Hustle and making some upgrades to Fun on a Budget Blog’s appearance.  Slowly but surely sprucing it up here.  I had half a pot of coffee for breakfast and leftover bibimbap for lunch before heading across town to pick out my bridesmaid dress for Sam’s wedding (whoop whoop!) and complete some much anticipated shopping via gift cards at Crate and Barrel. I purchased only one half of the amount of towels on my wish list because I wanted to stay near my gift card total to limit out of pocket spending. While driving home from my shopping excursions,  I resisted a snack attack and kept my foot on the gas pedal as I drove past all restaurants serving french fries.  Once home, I satiated that salt craving with food from our pantry, cleaned up a bit around the house, ate the second half of the leftover bibimbap for dinner, and then settled on the couch with a cup of peppermint-lemon tea for a night of catching up with my DVR. It was heavenly.

As soon as I realized that I had chosen a bridesmaid jumpsuit--not a dress--I had to let Sam know it was what I'd be wearing at her wedding...haha! I kid, I kid.

SUNDAY

Sunday was definitely dedicated to getting organized across multiple life areas. I started the day getting my written budget back on track, syncing that up with my mister’s written budget, and knocking out our first—and almost second—paid off debt’s as a married couple. No rest Just two weeks rest for the wicked in this house. After our finances were officially in order, I dedicated a few hours to blog work. I feel extremely far behind and have been enjoying getting back on the grind. I made a loose meal plan for the week, and we set out for Costco and Trader Joe’s to pick up the necessities (strictly sticking to the list and missing out on a few items we wanted). Cooking a bomb meal on Sunday to kick start the week has become one of my favorite rituals, so I made a batch of black bean burgers and an attempt at copying the Santorini Farro Salad I had a Cheesecake Factory last weekend. My salad wasn’t as good as theirs, but if I figure out what they are working with that I’m not, I’ll share the secret with all of you :) Post meal time, I rounded out my weekend by finishing up laundry and dishes. The fabulous life continues (please read sarcasm).

Cozy day in laundering some fresh towels and completing lots of paperwork.

This past weekend was a good opportunity to get back on the type of track that has helped me pay off so much debt over the last year and a half. Three years ago I would have spent at least $100 more at Crate and Barrel in order to get everything I wanted immediately, spent $50 extra to get my bridesmaid dress in store to avoid the “hassle” of taking another step to look it up online, and spent at least an additional $50.00 when grocery shopping to get everything I want all at once.

The willpower will prove it’s worth it once again when I use that unspent money to help put the kibosh on another loan payment later this week.

The weekend started with yoga and walk on the beach….ahhhh relaxing! The rest of the day was all about the to-do list. Between wedding, Beachbody, and life my to-do lists have gotten pretty long. Guest book – check, bridesmaid’s gifts – check, transportation – check, wedding invites – check. Phew! That feels good! Who knew that vacuuming for a few can transform your whole house?! I ran the vacuum around and picked up a few pieces of mail here and there and voila! Clean house! Grocery shopping, dinner on the grill, and finishing the movie comprised the rest of my day.

I’m always trying different fitness and nutrition challenges and this weekend was all about going sugar-free (including BBQ sauce, certain fruits, sweeteners, etc.). I actually made it through the entire weekend without eating sugar! YAY! Keeping myself busy was definitely a big part in my success. I had to prioritize my weekends this month and work on getting extra things done because I’ll be out of town next weekend celebrating Brittany’s wedding!!!!! How do you prioritize your weekends?!

FRIDAY

Friday kick started what was to become a marathon of wedding-related errands that lasted all weekend long. I am making a conscious effort to do other things and talk about other things (how miserable would I be to be around if I couldn’t do this), but when your wedding is less than 4 weeks away, you have to spend a lot of time just getting it done. Okay, now you have all been forewarned, so if you think wedding talk is at total snooze-fest or some form of cruel torture, you better get your eyes and brain cells out of here. Pronto.

Oh! Some of you stayed—I’m impressed :) So here we go: Friday I ran to the tailor for the hopefully final fitting for my wedding dress, and because it fit perfectly, I got to take it home with me too! All of this was prepaid, so technically on that particular Friday it cost me zero dollars. By the time I finished at the tailor’s, I was hungry for a snack, so dress in tow I went home where I had a quick bite and then squeezed in my workout for the day. It should also be noted that in the height of my snack attack, I also skipped a happy hour–hunger pains of being on a budget, I tell you what. I am planning on spray tanning for the wedding, and a test run on the first day of my 3 day weekend seemed like the best option for me (to avoid displaying any orange or streaky failures at work come Monday), so I showered and exfoliated, ate some leftovers for dinner, and headed to the closest tanning salon to engage in the operation spray tan research and decided that pending results would determine if I wanted to buy a second for the big day.  By the time I was finished getting my spray on, my fiancé was home and we spent some cozy couch time together before heading to bed to get some much-needed rest.

I took this picture early Saturday morning (pre-makeup and pre-shower), so I think it is safe to say that the spray tan will not be taking place the night before! Not my best look, but too funny not to share ;)

SATURDAY

Saturday was basically my day to get all of my different to-do lists in life (work, wedding, home, food, blog) together and create a cohesive master list, so that I could get my brain working as one unit rather than 854 million different pieces. I started bright and early sending off emails and final payments, creating very well-organized and detailed lists, and doing some research for minor décor details. Once my handsome partner in crime woke up, we went to our recently discovered breakfast restaurant of choice to squeeze in some quality time before business took over. I LOVE BRUNCH!! After our bellies were full of bacon, he went to his part time gig, and I came home to work on the blog. I followed that up with some errands at JoAnn’s and Dollar Tree (big spender, you know me). I finished the night with a trial run of a DIY garland that I’m creating for an upcoming party. That doesn’t sound like much activity for Saturday, but somehow it took up my entire day.

Future DIY link to come, but I don’t want to negate any “wow” factor (hardy-har-har) by spoiling the surprise for any blog readers that are doubling as wedding guests in a few weeks ;)

SUNDAY

On Sunday I woke up and did some relaxing yoga followed by 10 minutes of ab work (double time to make up for Saturday’s lack of working out). Then my fiancé woke up with the revelation that he wanted a new wedding band. Yay! (So much sarcasm). That set in motion a day completely dedicated to me making him complete all wedding tasks directly related to him:

His wedding band – Check!

Groomsmen gifts purchased – Check! Check! Check!

Groomsmen attire finalized and purchased – Check!

We also accomplished getting my band dropped off at the jeweler’s to be cleaned and re-sized and made a run to the grocery store to get us set for a week of eating tasty, healthy meals and snacks. Somewhere in the middle of all this, I got hangry, and we stopped at the mall food court to split a Greek gyro salad for lunch. After nearly 6 hours of running all over the place to get our gifts and last minute orders organized and finalized, we were ready for some comfort food and vegging out. Once we were home, I threw some baked potatoes in the oven and premade Copy Cat CPK Tortilla Soup on the stove to heat up for dinner while we watched Castaway on Netflix. Am I the only person who has never seen this movie? I now regret not watching it sooner. :)

Just enjoying ourselves while getting things done! Take note of my tan (2 days post spray)—much better than Friday, right?

*The numbers I’m sharing with you this weekend are less accurate than they have ever been, but unfortunately the majority of our spending was related to some surprise gift items we purchased for our wedding party and guests. To share that information would just be plain tacky, and I can’t. All money used for those items was saved ahead of time though, which is exactly what a Girl on a Budget would do!
