Every Monday we provide you with our past weekend’s agenda to show you how you can continue to do what you love on the weekend while using your common cents!12.22.14 Weekend Logo Pic

FRIDAY

Begin our travels home for Christmas break! Our ultimate goal on Friday was to make it to James’ mom’s house which was about a 12-13 hours drive. We made a pitstop to pick up a third golden retriever on the way :-) Splitting meals, packing snacks, and bringing water bottles helped keep food costs low.

12.22.14 Snack WeekendFriday Spending Stats:

  • Coffee (lots of it)                                          $10.00 (for both of us)
  • Breakfast at Chik-fil-A                                 $5.00 (for both of us)
  • Snacks from home                                      $0.00

 SATURDAY

Insanity max:30, quality time with family, and a delicious dinner helped up recover from a long drive and prepare for another one :-) My future MIL spoiled us by taking us to an AMAZING restaurant with fresh food and interesting flavor combinations…yum!

Our coffee addiction (also known as “stay-awake-and-focus-on-driving-for-24-hours-total) contributed to most of our spending over our trip…I have to say…I’m totally OK with that :-) What do you just HAVE to splurge on when you travel?

FRIDAY

I made a quick stop at the grocery store on my way home from work on Friday to pick up some garlic bread and a bottle of wine (and nixed getting a cart so other items would not win the battle of temptation). After three (really fun) weekends of traveling and having friends/family in town I was ready for a quiet date night consisting of spaghetti, meatballs, garlic bread, wine and my handsome better half. That paired nicely with a Nebraska Volleyball win for a quiet, happy night in.

 SATURDAY

Saturday morning I slept in, and I honestly can’t remember the last time I did this. I’m very glad it happened though :) After our slow wake up, my soon-to-be-betrothed and I went out for breakfast at a new (to us) restaurant with free wifi because it was our “wedding planning date”. With all the planning for the food, venue, cake, transportation, and music we kept pushing planning the ceremony to the side—hence the breakfast date. It was much easier to focus when we were out instead of at home; plus we didn’t have to clean up! We followed breakfast with a super exciting trip to Costco to get a couple of household items and used our “no cart rule” again in order to avoid unnecessary and unplanned spending. Later that day I attempted some wedding shopping at Nordstrom Rack—failed but succeeded in not purchasing all of the eye-catching holiday items—and completed some holiday shopping for a couple of parties I have this week. A good friend invited me to a downtown holiday festival but knowing I needed rest, I passed.  I stayed home and happily spent my night expanding my holiday movie repertoire by watching White Christmas for the first time while trying to catch up with the Christmas countdown by working on my Advent calendar. Officially 7 days behind.

Total Saturday Spending: $65.00

SUNDAY

I slept in AGAIN on Sunday. Who have I become? I’m still not hating it. My cute roommate made chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, which we both thoroughly enjoyed before we snuggled on the couch and added one more movie to my holiday have-seens (The Nightmare Before Christmas). After the movie, I went to Dillard’s and conquered my weekend wedding errand. On my way home I picked up groceries for the week and came home to tackle meal prepping (that was me trying to be as amazing as Sam—time will tell) to help Joe and I survive what will be a paperwork-filled DOOZY of a workweek. I know we will be much happier to come home to easy meals, and it might even leave time for us supreme dorks to catch a weeknight showing of The Desolation of Smaug.

  • Breakfast                                                                  $0.00

  • Movie (neflix instead of theater)                             $0.00

Total Sunday Spending: $130.00

Estimated Total Sunday Savings: $40.00

Total Estimated Weekend Spending: $210.00

Total Estimated Weekend Savings: $105.00

This was the first weekend in awhile where I actually spent more than my estimated savings, and most of that money went towards pretty boring stuff–laundry detergent, groceries, and wedding garb–but I did have 2 pretty fantastic breakfasts! The good news is that the “boring” spending was all paid for with pre-saved money, so it didn’t affect my funds for “fun”.

I do have to admit, that as holiday and traveling season gets closer and closer, it is much more difficult to keep my weekend spending in check–especially when I’m at Target. What tricks are you using to keep your weekend spending under control?

FRIDAY

My ideal Friday evening consists of happy hour, dinner at home, and a night on the couch with James…and that’s EXACTLY what happened! One drink at the bar kept the tab down, an easy pre-planned breakfast-for-dinner made it easy to stay away from the restaurants, and after a long week that couch was calling my name!

         Estimated Total Friday Savings: $47.00

SATURDAY

Saturday morning run, Shakeology for breakfast, coffee, and going through my budget (every week I update my budget to stay on track) kept me busy Saturday morning. Decorating for Christmas was on my mind so I stopped at the one and only Family Dollar to look for some cute but inexpensive options. They had so many cute things! I could have bought 15 different $5-$10 decorations, but I stuck with just ONE that I needed. I enjoyed a couple hours at the pool to spruce up my tan before diving into decorating. The rest of the evening consisted of decorating the courtyard, dinner at home (leftovers), putt putt (brought our own wine in a thermos), ice cream, and a movie at home on netflix. Another wild night for us 😉

SUNDAY

Sunday was full of “weekend stuff” – cleaning, laundry, meal plan & prep. Meal planning is really important to me because it helps me stick to my grocery shopping budget and nutrition plan by preparing all meals throughout the week ahead of time. This makes a big difference when you’re driving home hungry from work and want to stop at Chipotle or just go out to eat. Saves money and calories! I kept a running tab of everything that I was putting in my cart to make sure I stuck to my grocery budget…even had to put a few things back!

12.8 SaturdaySunday Spending Stats:

  • Breakfast/Coffee                                                                                 $0.00

It was nice to spend a relaxing weekend at home getting things done around the house, decorating, and catching up on Beachbody posts and challengers. It feels good to start the week with a  whole list of “to dos” behind you :-)

FRIDAY

Because of Thanksgiving Friday was an atypical Friday, I was faced with extra temptation to spend money while cutting loose (feel free to define “cutting loose” however you choose—my definition includes sweatpants, a glass of wine, and dinner that I didn’t cook myself) not only after I got off work but all day long.  Although my purse strings were tested frequently, I was able to thoroughly enjoy quality time with family and friends while spending to survive (hello food!) and saving when I could (no souvenirs for me). Joe’s sister was in town, so we wanted to show her some of our favorite parts of Arizona while she was here.

Friday morning started with coffee and cinnamon rolls at home before we piled into our car, picked up a friend, and started our trek to Sedona.  We stopped for lunch at a cute diner on the way(despite my suggestion that I pack lunches for us—ah, sometimes the rest of the world does not agree with my spend-as-little-as-possible philosophy and I have to keep reminding myself that is normal and I need to be flexible).  Joe’s sister was ridiculously kind and insisted on buying our meal, so I paid zero dollars. What goes around comes around, and we will be paying her back in the future :) Sedona is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been, and taking in the views is 100% free. Once the sun began to set we grabbed some coffee at a local shop (I paid for Joe and I) then walked around a main street checking out the souvenir shops. My friend and family made some purchases, but I refrained. I did have my eye out for any potential Christmas gifts, but because I wasn’t able to find an item that fit the bill, I passed on buying anything at all which saved me a nice chunk of change.

Our day trip turned into a night trip and we continued north up to Flagstaff to view the stars and planets through telescopes at the Lowell Observatory. We wanted to catch a presentation on constellations so we went to a local Target to kill time before the it started. I made a deal with myself that if I found any clothing items I liked for less than $5 I’d go ahead and buy them because I can find clothes at Target for less than $10 anytime. The sales weren’t anything to write home about (for myself and for potential gifts), and once again I kept my wallet closed during a shopping excursion.  We did have “dinner” (brace yourselves this is pretty gross) at the Target food court. Joe paid for me this time, and I’m pretty sure my $2.50 hot dog, the $2.50 bag of popcorn we shared, and the soda he gave me a few sips of were about the same price as our $10 coffee run earlier in the day.

SATURDAY

Saturday we all slept in and took our time waking up.  I uploaded the Saturday Morning Hustle and checked out posts on Financially Savvy Saturday while my future family brewed one fabulous pot of coffee and discussed sparring tactics. It was a really productive morning guys ;).  So after getting our caffeine fixes in and eating pumpkin pie for breakfast, we decided to meet up with a couple of good friends in downtown Phoenix for lunch and stroll through the Flea Market.  We managed to get a table at the famous Pizzeria Bianco and It. Was. Good. Gooooooooooood.  After pizza we browsed the Flea Market–which was very cute and filled with a good selection of jewelry, artwork, and delicious smelling candles. Although I didn’t buy anything yesterday while we were there, I collected a plethora of business cards, so I can follow up in the future when I know exactly what I want.  By the time we finished browsing the flea market booths and oohing and ahhing over one of the cutest, chubbiest faces on the planet (see below) we were all hungry again. Instead of stopping at a restaurant on the way back to our house we held strong and feasted on leftovers once we made it back to our abode.  The night was rounded out with more catching up and valuable face to face chat time since we don’t see each other often.

SUNDAY

So…….Sunday. There is not much to write about because I really only did four things total (and that includes eating leftovers). Sadly, we bid Joe’s sister farewell, and he took her to the airport early in the morning. I then stayed in bed and read until 9:00 AM before getting up to clean a bit around the house and make us a pot of coffee. The rest of the day was spent marathon stitching to try to make some major ground on my Advent Calendar before December flies by without me basking in my first grown up craft project glory. I spent a fair amount of time nailing down some upcoming gift purchases and writing for the blog. Joe and I rounded out the night by watching the Chiefs/Broncos game on the couch. Did I say I did four things? In truth that might have been an exaggeration, but a day of nothing was a MAJOR necessity for me. I needed a little recharge session before heading back to work this week.

It was nice to be able to have Joe’s sister in town to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday and an extended weekend together since we all live so far from the rest of our family members. The entire weekend went by waaaay too fast, and I’m not sure that I’m ready to get back to the grind.

How are you getting back to a routine and keeping it up as we get closer to Christmas? Are you making  changes to your weekend budget?

FRIDAY

I was so excited to leave work and drive to Orlando to see Brittany! She flew to Orlando to attend a conference so we were able to make it a friend’s trip too! I was soooo hungry driving to Orlando, but between the 21 day fix and my budget, I decided to skip a snack and wait until dinner. We were both tired after long days so we had a little pre dinner coffee in the room and then split an appetizer and sandwich at dinner…delicious! We stopped at Walgreens on the way home to grab a small snack and some $4.00 wine :-)

We enjoyed an easy lunch at my house followed by a nice, long, much needed nap. We sat around and enjoyed some girl talk while grilling out and drinking some wine. Joe did buy my burger and fries, but at least I am a cheap date! photo credit: www.freddysusa.com

The last two weekends, Joe and I have gone out to dinner on Friday night, and it has been a nice way to relax (I’m especially enjoying the no clean up) after the work week. We are thinking of making it a tradition because we can do it in a way that doesn’t cost much money…um, yes we went on a date to Freddy’s (and I’m pretty sure a most of the local high school students were on their dates there as well), but it tasted delicious and the company was good. Last weekend I paid (with a gift certificate) and this weekend, Joe picked up the tab, so I ate for free! We came home where I squeezed in a quick 10 minute relaxing yoga session, and then we rounded out the night by watching Dumb and Dumber on the couch before heading to bed.  A simple, relaxing, and cost free night :)

Friday Spending Stats:

  • Workout (free yoga app video)                                       $0.00
  • Dinner (Joe’s treat) @ Freddy’s                                       $0.00

Estimated Total Friday Savings: $5.00

SATURDAY

Saturday-2

Saturday was one of those days that I felt like I did a ton, and then when I looked back on it, I realized I didn’t do much—which is fine with me! It felt nice after a week of go, go, go! I woke up early to finish the Saturday Morning Hustle and catch up on all of my favorite blogs/articles from the past week. I spent a little quality time with my handsome sir before he headed out for the day and then went for a run OUTSIDE. Desert, I love you in November. I really do. I made the mistake of staying home to watch the Husker football game (can I even call it a game—it was more of a tragedy) instead of going to a free concert with friends. Fail. Although it did probably save me some money because even though the concert was free, I would have spent money on drinks and/or food just because I was out of the house. We are fully stocked with food right now, so I happily ate lunch and dinner at home. The highlight of my Saturday evening was reaching a milestone in my Advent Calendar craft project while watching college football.  At this point in my life—that is my idea of a good time.

Saturday Spending Stats:

  • Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner                                                          $0.00
  • Run (outside)                                                                           $0.00
  • Husker Tragedy & other College Football Games                  $0.00
  • Crafting                                                                                    $0.00

Total Saturday Spending: $0.00

Total Saturday Savings: $15.00

SUNDAY

Sunday-2

The wind was howling when I woke up Sunday morning, and I wimped out on my run, opting instead for a 10 minute cardio barre workout coupled with a 15 minute arm burner. Each time I do barre, it feels like I find muscles I never knew existed until that very moment, and it burrrrrrns. Yowza.

Joe was my Sunday brunch hero, and he made us cheddar jalapeño waffles to enjoy with our coffee. We rounded out the morning by cozying up on the couch and watched a Netflix showing of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (WARNING: TearJerker Alert! You will need tissues if you watch this movie).

After the Chiefs beat the Seahawks, we went on (another) hunt looking for the perfect (and perfectly priced) suits or tuxedos for the groomsmen in our wedding. Why is dressing the wedding party so difficult? I think it’s just hard to ask people to spend money wearing something they had no say in choosing for one stinking day. If anyone has any tips on dressing the groomsmen for less PLEASE, PLEASE pretty please share them with me! We struck out in making a final decision, but while looking for some delicious sale candles at Kohls, I found the wreath that is pictured above for $10. It was originally priced at $50.00! All was not lost, and now the wreath is playing a part in helping me slowly up my mantle game. I am definitely planning on adding more, but I admit it’s happening at the pace of a snail. Check in with me next Christmas—I’m sure it will look glorious by then.  😉

In addition to breakfast/brunch, I made a late and light lunch (chicken salad) and dinner (one pot lemon orzo shrimp) with ingredients we already had a home. Both were tasty and cost no extra money. Done and done.

SATURDAY

Weekend Saturday 11.20.14Breakfast at Chik-fil-a, shopping at the outlets, and a dueling piano bar kept us busy all day and night. Make subtle choices, like buying drink specials and abiding by the $10 rule while shopping, helped me stick with my budget during my trip. My $10 rule while we were shopping at the outlets was: If it’s $10 or under, I’ll consider buying it. It sound ridiculous, but I got a dress, two long sleeve shirts, and birthday gifts for my niece using that rule!
