FRIDAY

Last Friday I was lucky to be starting my spring break, but this Friday marked the beginning of the end for our household. We started our morning slowly together with some delicious eggs, green smoothies, and coffee. My husband had to see clients that afternoon, so we were able to squeeze in a quick round of tennis before duty called his name, and a nap called mine :) I also got a fair amount of work done on the blog and some browsing (but no purchasing) at a local thrift store. Knowing that we had plans for the remainder of the weekend, we decided to have a nice and quiet dinner in—a dinner that might not appear to be the most fabulous in the picture below but more than satisfied our mutual cravings for sauerkraut.

SATURDAY

I was lucky enough to naturally wake up early on Saturday morning and get in some quality blog work before my fun and therefore distracting roomie woke up to join me for coffee and breakfast. We watched a couple of episodes of House of Cards on Netflix before he left for work (do you see a pattern here—hint: I’m the lucky one), and I made the mistake of watching one episode of “Inside a Killer’s Mind”. BIG MISTAKE as I would find later on Saturday night.  Late that afternoon we met up with some friends for a round of disc golf—my first and majorly embarrassing round to be more specific. After the sun set and our game came to an end, we stopped at a Mexican restaurant where Joe and I opted not to share entrees so that we could live on leftovers the rest of the weekend. Newbie disc golf must be exhausting because I fell asleep sitting up in bed with all the lights in the room on within 10 minutes of arriving home. How am I going to go back to work on Monday?!?!?!

SUNDAY

I woke up early again on Sunday, but rather than working, I used this time to do more important things–like watch Golden Girls reruns :) I did finally crawl off the couch to complete some work and do some yoga before settling back on it to catch up on March Madness. As us piggies had planned while dining out on Saturday, we ate leftovers for lunch on Sunday (I was actually able to stretch mine into lunch AND dinner because I am a delicate little lady). My Joe decided to attempt a home hair cut—not a buzz cut folks, a real hair cut—and enlisted me as his trusty assistant.  Then he fired me. Then he rehired me to even out the back. It was somewhat of an ordeal but overall entertaining and a learning experience. Better his hair than mine. Mwahahahahahaha! The rest of Sunday was very low key and used to catch up on cleaning, cooking, and work tasks before I re-enter the real world.

It was nice to have a low cost and low key weekend after I had spent last weekend traveling. I especially needed the prep and rest time to get ready to head back to work. I love my job, but how many more days until summer?!?

How did you save money this past weekend? Does anyone have any tips on not sucking at disc golf?

FRIDAY

Day 6 and 7 pic assI had an exceptionally exciting Friday night ending with an 8:30 bedtime. I enjoyed one drink at my typical Friday afternoon Happy Hour with co-workers, grilled chicken and veggies on the grill with my fiance, and watched a couple episodes of lost (fighting my drooping eyelids the entire time) before heading to bed.

Friday Spending Stats:

  • Happy Hour                                                                             $6.00

SATURDAY

WSG Saturday 1.23.15I enjoyed some more R & R, wedding planning, a few errands and a date night. I woke up late to a rainy morning and decided to enjoy some coffee and, of course, LOST while checking some items off my To Do list. I finally decided to pry my booty off the couch to finish my wedding registry at W & S and get my ring fixed. We had some leftovers but after spending most of the day at home (and on the couch), I was itching to get out for dinner. We decided to try a new pizza place and head home for some more LOST…exciting!

Saturday Spending Stats:

  • Morning R & R                                                         $0.00
  • Wedding Registry                                                    $0.00

Estimated Total Saturday Saving: $30.00

SUNDAY

WSG Sunday 1.23.15Meal Prep Sunday! Today is my catch-up-with-as-much-as-possible-before-the-week-starts day. AM dog walk and run, phone meeting with a new coach on my team, breakfast, meal prep, laundry, miscellaneous to do list items, and blogging took up most of my time on Sunday. Enjoyed a meal of leftovers from the previous week and guess what?! Some more LOST!

Sunday Spending Stats:

FRIDAY

Friday kick started what was to become a marathon of wedding-related errands that lasted all weekend long. I am making a conscious effort to do other things and talk about other things (how miserable would I be to be around if I couldn’t do this), but when your wedding is less than 4 weeks away, you have to spend a lot of time just getting it done. Okay, now you have all been forewarned, so if you think wedding talk is at total snooze-fest or some form of cruel torture, you better get your eyes and brain cells out of here. Pronto.

Oh! Some of you stayed—I’m impressed :) So here we go: Friday I ran to the tailor for the hopefully final fitting for my wedding dress, and because it fit perfectly, I got to take it home with me too! All of this was prepaid, so technically on that particular Friday it cost me zero dollars. By the time I finished at the tailor’s, I was hungry for a snack, so dress in tow I went home where I had a quick bite and then squeezed in my workout for the day. It should also be noted that in the height of my snack attack, I also skipped a happy hour–hunger pains of being on a budget, I tell you what. I am planning on spray tanning for the wedding, and a test run on the first day of my 3 day weekend seemed like the best option for me (to avoid displaying any orange or streaky failures at work come Monday), so I showered and exfoliated, ate some leftovers for dinner, and headed to the closest tanning salon to engage in the operation spray tan research and decided that pending results would determine if I wanted to buy a second for the big day.  By the time I was finished getting my spray on, my fiancé was home and we spent some cozy couch time together before heading to bed to get some much-needed rest.

I took this picture early Saturday morning (pre-makeup and pre-shower), so I think it is safe to say that the spray tan will not be taking place the night before! Not my best look, but too funny not to share ;)

SATURDAY

Saturday was basically my day to get all of my different to-do lists in life (work, wedding, home, food, blog) together and create a cohesive master list, so that I could get my brain working as one unit rather than 854 million different pieces. I started bright and early sending off emails and final payments, creating very well-organized and detailed lists, and doing some research for minor décor details. Once my handsome partner in crime woke up, we went to our recently discovered breakfast restaurant of choice to squeeze in some quality time before business took over. I LOVE BRUNCH!! After our bellies were full of bacon, he went to his part time gig, and I came home to work on the blog. I followed that up with some errands at JoAnn’s and Dollar Tree (big spender, you know me). I finished the night with a trial run of a DIY garland that I’m creating for an upcoming party. That doesn’t sound like much activity for Saturday, but somehow it took up my entire day.

Future DIY link to come, but I don’t want to negate any “wow” factor (hardy-har-har) by spoiling the surprise for any blog readers that are doubling as wedding guests in a few weeks ;)

SUNDAY

On Sunday I woke up and did some relaxing yoga followed by 10 minutes of ab work (double time to make up for Saturday’s lack of working out). Then my fiancé woke up with the revelation that he wanted a new wedding band. Yay! (So much sarcasm). That set in motion a day completely dedicated to me making him complete all wedding tasks directly related to him:

His wedding band – Check!

Groomsmen gifts purchased – Check! Check! Check!

Groomsmen attire finalized and purchased – Check!

We also accomplished getting my band dropped off at the jeweler’s to be cleaned and re-sized and made a run to the grocery store to get us set for a week of eating tasty, healthy meals and snacks. Somewhere in the middle of all this, I got hangry, and we stopped at the mall food court to split a Greek gyro salad for lunch. After nearly 6 hours of running all over the place to get our gifts and last minute orders organized and finalized, we were ready for some comfort food and vegging out. Once we were home, I threw some baked potatoes in the oven and premade Copy Cat CPK Tortilla Soup on the stove to heat up for dinner while we watched Castaway on Netflix. Am I the only person who has never seen this movie? I now regret not watching it sooner. :)

Just enjoying ourselves while getting things done! Take note of my tan (2 days post spray)—much better than Friday, right?

*The numbers I’m sharing with you this weekend are less accurate than they have ever been, but unfortunately the majority of our spending was related to some surprise gift items we purchased for our wedding party and guests. To share that information would just be plain tacky, and I can’t. All money used for those items was saved ahead of time though, which is exactly what a Girl on a Budget would do!

FRIDAY

Because of Thanksgiving Friday was an atypical Friday, I was faced with extra temptation to spend money while cutting loose (feel free to define “cutting loose” however you choose—my definition includes sweatpants, a glass of wine, and dinner that I didn’t cook myself) not only after I got off work but all day long.  Although my purse strings were tested frequently, I was able to thoroughly enjoy quality time with family and friends while spending to survive (hello food!) and saving when I could (no souvenirs for me). Joe’s sister was in town, so we wanted to show her some of our favorite parts of Arizona while she was here.

Friday morning started with coffee and cinnamon rolls at home before we piled into our car, picked up a friend, and started our trek to Sedona.  We stopped for lunch at a cute diner on the way(despite my suggestion that I pack lunches for us—ah, sometimes the rest of the world does not agree with my spend-as-little-as-possible philosophy and I have to keep reminding myself that is normal and I need to be flexible).  Joe’s sister was ridiculously kind and insisted on buying our meal, so I paid zero dollars. What goes around comes around, and we will be paying her back in the future :) Sedona is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been, and taking in the views is 100% free. Once the sun began to set we grabbed some coffee at a local shop (I paid for Joe and I) then walked around a main street checking out the souvenir shops. My friend and family made some purchases, but I refrained. I did have my eye out for any potential Christmas gifts, but because I wasn’t able to find an item that fit the bill, I passed on buying anything at all which saved me a nice chunk of change.

Our day trip turned into a night trip and we continued north up to Flagstaff to view the stars and planets through telescopes at the Lowell Observatory. We wanted to catch a presentation on constellations so we went to a local Target to kill time before the it started. I made a deal with myself that if I found any clothing items I liked for less than $5 I’d go ahead and buy them because I can find clothes at Target for less than $10 anytime. The sales weren’t anything to write home about (for myself and for potential gifts), and once again I kept my wallet closed during a shopping excursion.  We did have “dinner” (brace yourselves this is pretty gross) at the Target food court. Joe paid for me this time, and I’m pretty sure my $2.50 hot dog, the $2.50 bag of popcorn we shared, and the soda he gave me a few sips of were about the same price as our $10 coffee run earlier in the day.

SATURDAY

Saturday we all slept in and took our time waking up.  I uploaded the Saturday Morning Hustle and checked out posts on Financially Savvy Saturday while my future family brewed one fabulous pot of coffee and discussed sparring tactics. It was a really productive morning guys ;).  So after getting our caffeine fixes in and eating pumpkin pie for breakfast, we decided to meet up with a couple of good friends in downtown Phoenix for lunch and stroll through the Flea Market.  We managed to get a table at the famous Pizzeria Bianco and It. Was. Good. Gooooooooooood.  After pizza we browsed the Flea Market–which was very cute and filled with a good selection of jewelry, artwork, and delicious smelling candles. Although I didn’t buy anything yesterday while we were there, I collected a plethora of business cards, so I can follow up in the future when I know exactly what I want.  By the time we finished browsing the flea market booths and oohing and ahhing over one of the cutest, chubbiest faces on the planet (see below) we were all hungry again. Instead of stopping at a restaurant on the way back to our house we held strong and feasted on leftovers once we made it back to our abode.  The night was rounded out with more catching up and valuable face to face chat time since we don’t see each other often.

SUNDAY

So…….Sunday. There is not much to write about because I really only did four things total (and that includes eating leftovers). Sadly, we bid Joe’s sister farewell, and he took her to the airport early in the morning. I then stayed in bed and read until 9:00 AM before getting up to clean a bit around the house and make us a pot of coffee. The rest of the day was spent marathon stitching to try to make some major ground on my Advent Calendar before December flies by without me basking in my first grown up craft project glory. I spent a fair amount of time nailing down some upcoming gift purchases and writing for the blog. Joe and I rounded out the night by watching the Chiefs/Broncos game on the couch. Did I say I did four things? In truth that might have been an exaggeration, but a day of nothing was a MAJOR necessity for me. I needed a little recharge session before heading back to work this week.

Joe did buy my burger and fries, but at least I am a cheap date! photo credit: www.freddysusa.com

The last two weekends, Joe and I have gone out to dinner on Friday night, and it has been a nice way to relax (I’m especially enjoying the no clean up) after the work week. We are thinking of making it a tradition because we can do it in a way that doesn’t cost much money…um, yes we went on a date to Freddy’s (and I’m pretty sure a most of the local high school students were on their dates there as well), but it tasted delicious and the company was good. Last weekend I paid (with a gift certificate) and this weekend, Joe picked up the tab, so I ate for free! We came home where I squeezed in a quick 10 minute relaxing yoga session, and then we rounded out the night by watching Dumb and Dumber on the couch before heading to bed.  A simple, relaxing, and cost free night :)

Friday Spending Stats:

  • Workout (free yoga app video)                                       $0.00
  • Dinner (Joe’s treat) @ Freddy’s                                       $0.00

Estimated Total Friday Savings: $5.00

SATURDAY

Saturday-2

Saturday was one of those days that I felt like I did a ton, and then when I looked back on it, I realized I didn’t do much—which is fine with me! It felt nice after a week of go, go, go! I woke up early to finish the Saturday Morning Hustle and catch up on all of my favorite blogs/articles from the past week. I spent a little quality time with my handsome sir before he headed out for the day and then went for a run OUTSIDE. Desert, I love you in November. I really do. I made the mistake of staying home to watch the Husker football game (can I even call it a game—it was more of a tragedy) instead of going to a free concert with friends. Fail. Although it did probably save me some money because even though the concert was free, I would have spent money on drinks and/or food just because I was out of the house. We are fully stocked with food right now, so I happily ate lunch and dinner at home. The highlight of my Saturday evening was reaching a milestone in my Advent Calendar craft project while watching college football.  At this point in my life—that is my idea of a good time.

Saturday Spending Stats:

  • Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner                                                          $0.00
  • Run (outside)                                                                           $0.00
  • Husker Tragedy & other College Football Games                  $0.00
  • Crafting                                                                                    $0.00

Total Saturday Spending: $0.00

Total Saturday Savings: $15.00

SUNDAY

Sunday-2

The wind was howling when I woke up Sunday morning, and I wimped out on my run, opting instead for a 10 minute cardio barre workout coupled with a 15 minute arm burner. Each time I do barre, it feels like I find muscles I never knew existed until that very moment, and it burrrrrrns. Yowza.

Joe was my Sunday brunch hero, and he made us cheddar jalapeño waffles to enjoy with our coffee. We rounded out the morning by cozying up on the couch and watched a Netflix showing of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (WARNING: TearJerker Alert! You will need tissues if you watch this movie).

After the Chiefs beat the Seahawks, we went on (another) hunt looking for the perfect (and perfectly priced) suits or tuxedos for the groomsmen in our wedding. Why is dressing the wedding party so difficult? I think it’s just hard to ask people to spend money wearing something they had no say in choosing for one stinking day. If anyone has any tips on dressing the groomsmen for less PLEASE, PLEASE pretty please share them with me! We struck out in making a final decision, but while looking for some delicious sale candles at Kohls, I found the wreath that is pictured above for $10. It was originally priced at $50.00! All was not lost, and now the wreath is playing a part in helping me slowly up my mantle game. I am definitely planning on adding more, but I admit it’s happening at the pace of a snail. Check in with me next Christmas—I’m sure it will look glorious by then.  😉

In addition to breakfast/brunch, I made a late and light lunch (chicken salad) and dinner (one pot lemon orzo shrimp) with ingredients we already had a home. Both were tasty and cost no extra money. Done and done.
