FRIDAY

Last Friday I was lucky to be starting my spring break, but this Friday marked the beginning of the end for our household. We started our morning slowly together with some delicious eggs, green smoothies, and coffee. My husband had to see clients that afternoon, so we were able to squeeze in a quick round of tennis before duty called his name, and a nap called mine :) I also got a fair amount of work done on the blog and some browsing (but no purchasing) at a local thrift store. Knowing that we had plans for the remainder of the weekend, we decided to have a nice and quiet dinner in—a dinner that might not appear to be the most fabulous in the picture below but more than satisfied our mutual cravings for sauerkraut.

SATURDAY

I was lucky enough to naturally wake up early on Saturday morning and get in some quality blog work before my fun and therefore distracting roomie woke up to join me for coffee and breakfast. We watched a couple of episodes of House of Cards on Netflix before he left for work (do you see a pattern here—hint: I’m the lucky one), and I made the mistake of watching one episode of “Inside a Killer’s Mind”. BIG MISTAKE as I would find later on Saturday night.  Late that afternoon we met up with some friends for a round of disc golf—my first and majorly embarrassing round to be more specific. After the sun set and our game came to an end, we stopped at a Mexican restaurant where Joe and I opted not to share entrees so that we could live on leftovers the rest of the weekend. Newbie disc golf must be exhausting because I fell asleep sitting up in bed with all the lights in the room on within 10 minutes of arriving home. How am I going to go back to work on Monday?!?!?!

SUNDAY

I woke up early again on Sunday, but rather than working, I used this time to do more important things–like watch Golden Girls reruns :) I did finally crawl off the couch to complete some work and do some yoga before settling back on it to catch up on March Madness. As us piggies had planned while dining out on Saturday, we ate leftovers for lunch on Sunday (I was actually able to stretch mine into lunch AND dinner because I am a delicate little lady). My Joe decided to attempt a home hair cut—not a buzz cut folks, a real hair cut—and enlisted me as his trusty assistant.  Then he fired me. Then he rehired me to even out the back. It was somewhat of an ordeal but overall entertaining and a learning experience. Better his hair than mine. Mwahahahahahaha! The rest of Sunday was very low key and used to catch up on cleaning, cooking, and work tasks before I re-enter the real world.

It was nice to have a low cost and low key weekend after I had spent last weekend traveling. I especially needed the prep and rest time to get ready to head back to work. I love my job, but how many more days until summer?!?

How did you save money this past weekend? Does anyone have any tips on not sucking at disc golf?

Plantains with coconut oil baked in the oven and served over plain Greek yogurt with cinnamon and some honey. YUM!

The weekend started with yoga and walk on the beach….ahhhh relaxing! The rest of the day was all about the to-do list. Between wedding, Beachbody, and life my to-do lists have gotten pretty long. Guest book – check, bridesmaid’s gifts – check, transportation – check, wedding invites – check. Phew! That feels good! Who knew that vacuuming for a few can transform your whole house?! I ran the vacuum around and picked up a few pieces of mail here and there and voila! Clean house! Grocery shopping, dinner on the grill, and finishing the movie comprised the rest of my day.

Saturday Spending Stats:

  • Yoga and walk on the beach                                           $2.00 (donation)

Finally a few hours by the pool :-)

I didn’t get as much done as I wanted yesterday so I spend the morning working on Beachbody invites and participation, some more wedding stuff, and cleaning. I was able to head to the pool for a couple hours of sun which was much needed and super relaxing! A small meal prep (leaving for Brittany’s wedding on Thursdsay!), dinner, and TV watching ended my productive weekend J

Sunday Spending Stats:

  • Meals                                                             $0.00
  • Sunday Stuff                                                  $0.00

Estimated Total Sunday Savings: $30.00 (meals out)

Total Estimated Weekend Spending: $16.00

Total Estimated Weekend Savings: $100.00

I’m always trying different fitness and nutrition challenges and this weekend was all about going sugar-free (including BBQ sauce, certain fruits, sweeteners, etc.). I actually made it through the entire weekend without eating sugar! YAY! Keeping myself busy was definitely a big part in my success. I had to prioritize my weekends this month and work on getting extra things done because I’ll be out of town next weekend celebrating Brittany’s wedding!!!!! How do you prioritize your weekends?!

Every Monday we provide you with our past weekend’s agenda to show you how you can continue to do what you love on the weekend while using your common cents.12.8 Cover

FRIDAY

My ideal Friday evening consists of happy hour, dinner at home, and a night on the couch with James…and that’s EXACTLY what happened! One drink at the bar kept the tab down, an easy pre-planned breakfast-for-dinner made it easy to stay away from the restaurants, and after a long week that couch was calling my name!

12.8 FridayFriday Spending Stats:

  • Scrambled eggs & coffee at home                                       $0.00
  • Packed a lunch to eat at work                                              $0.00
  • One drink at HH                                                                    $7.00
  • Dinner at home                                                                     $0.00
  • Nightlife/Entertainment                                                       $0.00

Total Friday Spending: $7.00

         Estimated Total Friday Savings: $47.00

SATURDAY

Saturday morning run, Shakeology for breakfast, coffee, and going through my budget (every week I update my budget to stay on track) kept me busy Saturday morning. Decorating for Christmas was on my mind so I stopped at the one and only Family Dollar to look for some cute but inexpensive options. They had so many cute things! I could have bought 15 different $5-$10 decorations, but I stuck with just ONE that I needed. I enjoyed a couple hours at the pool to spruce up my tan before diving into decorating. The rest of the evening consisted of decorating the courtyard, dinner at home (leftovers), putt putt (brought our own wine in a thermos), ice cream, and a movie at home on netflix. Another wild night for us 😉

  • Shakeology & Coffee                                                      $0.00

  • Movie at home                                                                $0.00 (Netflix)

Total Saturday Spending: $33.00

Estimated Total Saturday Savings: $55.00

SUNDAY

Sunday was full of “weekend stuff” – cleaning, laundry, meal plan & prep. Meal planning is really important to me because it helps me stick to my grocery shopping budget and nutrition plan by preparing all meals throughout the week ahead of time. This makes a big difference when you’re driving home hungry from work and want to stop at Chipotle or just go out to eat. Saves money and calories! I kept a running tab of everything that I was putting in my cart to make sure I stuck to my grocery budget…even had to put a few things back!

12.8 SaturdaySunday Spending Stats:

  • Breakfast/Coffee                                                                                 $0.00
  • Meal Plan & Prep for Week                                                                $0.00
  • Grocery Shopping                                                                              $75 (grocery money)
  • Boring Weekend Stuff (cleaning, laundry, more decorating)           $0.00
  • Dinner at home                                                                                  $0.00

Total Sunday Spending: $0.00

Estimated Total Sunday Savings: $25.00

Total Estimated Weekend Spending: $40.00

Total Estimated Weekend Savings: $127.00

It was nice to spend a relaxing weekend at home getting things done around the house, decorating, and catching up on Beachbody posts and challengers. It feels good to start the week with a  whole list of “to dos” behind you :-)

FRIDAY

Because of Thanksgiving Friday was an atypical Friday, I was faced with extra temptation to spend money while cutting loose (feel free to define “cutting loose” however you choose—my definition includes sweatpants, a glass of wine, and dinner that I didn’t cook myself) not only after I got off work but all day long.  Although my purse strings were tested frequently, I was able to thoroughly enjoy quality time with family and friends while spending to survive (hello food!) and saving when I could (no souvenirs for me). Joe’s sister was in town, so we wanted to show her some of our favorite parts of Arizona while she was here.

Friday morning started with coffee and cinnamon rolls at home before we piled into our car, picked up a friend, and started our trek to Sedona.  We stopped for lunch at a cute diner on the way(despite my suggestion that I pack lunches for us—ah, sometimes the rest of the world does not agree with my spend-as-little-as-possible philosophy and I have to keep reminding myself that is normal and I need to be flexible).  Joe’s sister was ridiculously kind and insisted on buying our meal, so I paid zero dollars. What goes around comes around, and we will be paying her back in the future :) Sedona is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been, and taking in the views is 100% free. Once the sun began to set we grabbed some coffee at a local shop (I paid for Joe and I) then walked around a main street checking out the souvenir shops. My friend and family made some purchases, but I refrained. I did have my eye out for any potential Christmas gifts, but because I wasn’t able to find an item that fit the bill, I passed on buying anything at all which saved me a nice chunk of change.

Our day trip turned into a night trip and we continued north up to Flagstaff to view the stars and planets through telescopes at the Lowell Observatory. We wanted to catch a presentation on constellations so we went to a local Target to kill time before the it started. I made a deal with myself that if I found any clothing items I liked for less than $5 I’d go ahead and buy them because I can find clothes at Target for less than $10 anytime. The sales weren’t anything to write home about (for myself and for potential gifts), and once again I kept my wallet closed during a shopping excursion.  We did have “dinner” (brace yourselves this is pretty gross) at the Target food court. Joe paid for me this time, and I’m pretty sure my $2.50 hot dog, the $2.50 bag of popcorn we shared, and the soda he gave me a few sips of were about the same price as our $10 coffee run earlier in the day.

SATURDAY

Saturday we all slept in and took our time waking up.  I uploaded the Saturday Morning Hustle and checked out posts on Financially Savvy Saturday while my future family brewed one fabulous pot of coffee and discussed sparring tactics. It was a really productive morning guys ;).  So after getting our caffeine fixes in and eating pumpkin pie for breakfast, we decided to meet up with a couple of good friends in downtown Phoenix for lunch and stroll through the Flea Market.  We managed to get a table at the famous Pizzeria Bianco and It. Was. Good. Gooooooooooood.  After pizza we browsed the Flea Market–which was very cute and filled with a good selection of jewelry, artwork, and delicious smelling candles. Although I didn’t buy anything yesterday while we were there, I collected a plethora of business cards, so I can follow up in the future when I know exactly what I want.  By the time we finished browsing the flea market booths and oohing and ahhing over one of the cutest, chubbiest faces on the planet (see below) we were all hungry again. Instead of stopping at a restaurant on the way back to our house we held strong and feasted on leftovers once we made it back to our abode.  The night was rounded out with more catching up and valuable face to face chat time since we don’t see each other often.

SUNDAY

So…….Sunday. There is not much to write about because I really only did four things total (and that includes eating leftovers). Sadly, we bid Joe’s sister farewell, and he took her to the airport early in the morning. I then stayed in bed and read until 9:00 AM before getting up to clean a bit around the house and make us a pot of coffee. The rest of the day was spent marathon stitching to try to make some major ground on my Advent Calendar before December flies by without me basking in my first grown up craft project glory. I spent a fair amount of time nailing down some upcoming gift purchases and writing for the blog. Joe and I rounded out the night by watching the Chiefs/Broncos game on the couch. Did I say I did four things? In truth that might have been an exaggeration, but a day of nothing was a MAJOR necessity for me. I needed a little recharge session before heading back to work this week.

It was nice to be able to have Joe’s sister in town to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday and an extended weekend together since we all live so far from the rest of our family members. The entire weekend went by waaaay too fast, and I’m not sure that I’m ready to get back to the grind.

How are you getting back to a routine and keeping it up as we get closer to Christmas? Are you making  changes to your weekend budget?

I was so excited to leave work and drive to Orlando to see Brittany! She flew to Orlando to attend a conference so we were able to make it a friend’s trip too! I was soooo hungry driving to Orlando, but between the 21 day fix and my budget, I decided to skip a snack and wait until dinner. We were both tired after long days so we had a little pre dinner coffee in the room and then split an appetizer and sandwich at dinner…delicious! We stopped at Walgreens on the way home to grab a small snack and some $4.00 wine :-)

FRIDAY

Friday

Friday was Halloween, and luckily Joe and I were invited to a low key costume party with killer (pun intended) snacks.  I rocked the sugar skull look while Joe went as the hunter from Jumanji. Both of our costumes were pretty frugal when compared to what people pay to prep for Halloween these days. On Thursday I bought some fake flowers from JoAnn’s and duct taped/hotglued them to an old headband to create the hairpiece I wore.  Joe had leftover white and black face paint from a previous costume, and the red “paint” is actually lipstick that I stenciled onto my face. I was able to wear clothes that were already in my closet, so in all I only spent $20 on the costume (and that was Thursday, so technically not the “weekend” but I thought it was worth sharing). Joe already had the hat, suit, shirt, tie, socks, shoes, and facial hair 😉 for his costume before making any purchases. He did stop at the thrift store to get a $10 satchel (that doubled as a beverage carrier at the party) to enhance his look. The wonderful party hostesses supplied snacks, and I enjoyed one beer we brought from home while playing Cards Against Humanity—which means I spent ZERO dollars on Halloween. I don’t think I’ve ever pulled that off before, but my friends deserve more credit than I do. Muchas gracias mis amigas!

Friday Spending Stats:

  • Dinner                                                                      $0.00
  • Halloween Party                                                      $0.00
  • BYOB Drinks                                                            $0.00

Total Spent on Friday: $0.00

Estimated Total Friday Savings: $10.00

SATURDAY

Saturday1

saturday

Saturday day might as well have been called “sports” day because sports dominated my life. I started with 2 giant cups of coffee as I caught up on blog work—posting Sam and I’s favorite links of the past week in the Saturday Morning Hustle and then linking up to Financially Savvy Saturdays and checking out some other entertaining and informative financial posts from the week. Joe coached his last soccer game of the season at 10:00 AM, so I chatted on the phone with my mom while watching the bittersweet game. After soccer, I ran a couple errands and then headed back home to catch the Husker football game on TV. I ate lunch at home and snuck in a circuit training workout during the game before hitting the shower and driving to Scottsdale where Joe and I met some friends for the Arizona Fall League All Star baseball game. We actually got to go to the game for free and got to treat our friends to the game too because one of Joe’s close pals had a bunch of company tickets that wouldn’t have been used otherwise.  Joe bought me a beer at the game, and I brought my own sunflower seeds instead of purchasing a snack there. Although I’ll admit, I had to avoid the hotdog stand entirely—it was tempting but unnecessary. We all went to a local sports bar after the game for dinner and drinks. Joe and I split a buffalo chicken wrap and fries, and each enjoyed one drink before loading up on water. Since he covered me at the game, I picked up the sports bar tab.

Saturday Spending Stats:

  • Breakfast/Coffee (at home)                                              $0.00

SUNDAY

Sunday

Sunday morning, I woke up to nice cool temps and decided to grab a cozy blanket and a hot cup of coffee before heading out to enjoy the weather on my patio.  It was pure bliss. By the time I had finished my first cup of the good stuff, Joe had woken up and was busy making breakfast in the kitchen. I am not a photography expert, thus my crappy iPhone shots, but I wish I could do the breakfast burrito he made justice. It was all about the underside of the tortilla—he explained the magical process to me at least twice but I was so enamored with the deliciousness going on in my mouth I couldn’t tell you what he said. It was that good. So good, I think I just dedicated half of my Sunday recap to profess my undying love for that burrito. Joe and I watched a couple episodes of Lost before I took a power nap and then hit the chores hard. I planned meals for the week, made a quick run to the grocery store, and then took advantage of the weather and got in some cardio outside. I also prepped smoothies for the week as my “healthy habit” portion of the November Health and Wealth Challenge I joined.  If you have read any of these posts before, you know I like to start my Monday feeling rejuvenated, and after a busy Friday and Saturday, I was more than happy to spend Sunday pulling our house together a bit and recharging my brain and body.

Not a lot of spending happening this weekend, but I cut it in half simply by paying attention to everything I put out. Now that it’s officially November, I feel like the weekends are about to get a little bit crazy. Do you have any strategies for saving money and having fun on the weekend–especially with the high travel times that are approaching?

SATURDAY

Saturday 10.11.14

My day started out with a morning run, filling up with my shake, and packing to head to James’ brother’s house. We enjoyed a delicious pre-bar crawl lunch where we ordered a few tacos and some drinks on special. After I’ve woken up with terrible hangovers the past two Sunday’s, I vowed to myself that I was going to stay sober (mostly) throughout the day to avoid a 3rd-Sunday-in-a-row-hangover. Not only did I save myself from a hangover, but I saved myself at least $30 on drinks (and calories)!
