Weekend Survival Guide for the Girl on a Budget

Issue 50

Every Monday we provide you with our past weekend’s agenda to show you how you can continue to do what you love on the weekend while using your common cents.

FRIDAY

Friday-paking lot

Friday afternoon I stayed late at work to complete some paperwork. Sometimes I like to do that because it reduces stress on the weekend and makes my Monday morning much better. Despite being a little tired after work, I whipped up a favorite (and easy) recipe from Budget Bytes, Teriyaki Noodle Bowls, instead of ordering pizza like my brain was begging me to. That’s where I saved my money on Friday. Then I spent the next few hours cheering on the KC Royals as they won their second straight playoff game :) VERY shortly after that, I fell asleep. My handsome better half and I had been battling a sinus infection/cold/cough medley of grossness and phlegm all week, so getting a lot of rest was high on my weekend priority list.  Once that game was over, I was out.

Friday Spending Stats:

  • Dinner (cooked instead of ordered out)                $0.00
  • KC Royals Playoff Game                                          $0.00

Total Spent on Friday:         $0.00

Estimated Total Friday Savings:       $20.00

SATURDAY

Saturday - monkey

Saturday - turtle

I woke up early Saturday morning to get my blog on—posting the Saturday Morning Hustle and checking out some interesting posts on the Financially Savvy Saturday Link Up.  Around 7:30 AM my friend, her perfect baby girl, and I headed to the Phoenix Zoo for the Zoowalk for Autism Research. We made a quick pit stop at QT to grab coffee and juice on our way there (much cheaper than Starbucks)  and following our power walk with the wild animals stopped at Pei Wei for lunch. We both ordered kids meals to save money on food that wouldn’t be eaten anyway. Truthfully, I didn’t even finish off my kid sized portion—that really puts portion size into perspective!

After the zoo, I went home and took a catnap before setting out with the intent to stop at the grocery store, but I was distracted by this little piece of heaven called Target and ended up buying (off brand) Post-Its and (on sale) Thank You cards instead of milk and coffee. Oops. Then after Target, I HAD to stop at Hobby Lobby to scope out some wreaths I’ve been eyeing for our ugly front door.  It kind of felt like I was the moose in the “If you Give a Moose a Muffin” book because once I veered off the original plan and chose Target over Trader Joe’s, other stores started calling my name too, and I kept the impulsive store hopping streak going.  The somewhat embarrassing truth is truth is that my décor game is so underdeveloped, I couldn’t confidently choose a freaking wreath!!  I become overwhelmed with all of the options (why are there so many options!?!?) and left Hobby Lobby empty handed. I was in a rush to come home and watch Nebraska take on Michigan State anyway. Watching sporting events at home started as a strategy I forced myself to use to save money, but now I’m noticing that I actually prefer watching games like this. It’s much more comfortable. I can wear my yoga pants with no shame and don’t feel obligated to buy drinks or food like I do when I’m at a bar.

Saturday Spending Stats:

  • Breakfast/Coffee                                                                                      $2.50
  • Zoowalk for Autism Research (prepaid & no snacks at zoo)                 $0.00
  • Lunch                                                                                                         $7.50
  • Target                                                                                                      $10.00
  • Hobby Lobby                                                                                            $0.00
  • Nebraska Football Game                                                                         $0.00

 Total Spent on Saturday:      $20.00

Estimated Total Saturday Savings:      $52.00

SUNDAY

SUnday - Calendar

On Sunday I woke up to the nice surprise of blueberry pancakes and eggs :) We’ve been so busy lately that it’s been awhile since we’ve enjoyed brunch at home.  It was delicious and very sweet. I am joining some girlfriends in a “craft night” starting this week.  Our first project is an Advent Calendar, so I had to purchase my pattern from Sugar House Shop on Etsy. Lucky for my wallet, I had won an Etsy gift card by entering a contest over at Helene in Between a couple of weeks ago and was able to get my pattern for free (Thanks Helene!). Now, about the whole sewing thing…hopefully I fare better in the calendar department than I did with the wreaths, haha. Every domesticated goddess had to start somewhere, right?

Later that morning, Joe and I tag teamed the grocery store (holding off on some purchases until we hit Costco in order to save money) before heading to a matinee showing of Gone Girl. We are really relaxed with who pays on our “dates,” so we just went Dutch with the Mister buying the tickets and myself buying the snacks.  The cost was within 75 cents of being equal. In addition to hitting the theater during the day, we save money by bringing a “loyalty cup” to get $1.50 refills on soda instead of paying full price each time. That extra large cup is plenty big enough for us to share—just like all the other snacks we get at the movies. After the movie we returned home to watch the KC Royals sweep the Angels, and I can’t think of a better way to finish off a weekend than that!!!

Sunday Spending Stats:

  • Brunch                                                 $0.00
  • Advent Calendar                                 $0.00
  • Grocery Store                                      $52.00
  • Gone Girl @ Movie Theater                $13.00
  • KC Royals Game                                  $0.00

                                                             Total Spent on Sunday:             $65.00

Estimated Total Sunday Savings:             $62.00

Total Estimated Weekend SPENDING:             $85.00

Total Estimated Weekend SAVINGS:           $134.00

This past weekend I was able to ditch my nasty cold (almost completely), finally nosh on some blueberry pancakes at home, and cheer for all my favorite fall teams on the tube–which is like finding a pot of gold when you live in AZ and your teams are all located in the Midwest–all while spending less than $100 and saving more than $130 :)

Weekend Survival Guide for the Girl on a Budget

Issue 49

Every Monday we provide you with our past weekend’s agenda to show you how you can continue to do what you love on the weekend while using your common cents.

FRIDAY

Fri-cookies

I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again…and again and again and again. The best time to hit the grocery store or Costco is at 4:00 PM on Friday, so even though some work colleagues were meeting for happy hour on Friday afternoon, I decided to hit Costco before considering joining them. While at Costco I snagged most of the food I wanted but forced myself to pass on bacon, a bulk package of post its, and a bottle of wine. By the time I finished shopping, my work cohorts were dispersing, so I headed home to unload my loot and hit the couch with a brew from the fridge just in time to watch Sporting KC lose in the final minutes of their match. Following the loss (which is becoming all too common in my humble and loyal fan opinion), I was prepared to muster up some energy to cook dinner for mi amor and myself, but he decided to join his coworkers at a happy hour that had a free munchies buffet—which gave me a little more time for R&R. I opted to stay home, and instead of making dinner I rolled some frozen cookie dough into balls, lined them up on a cookie sheet, and had dessert instead!

Friday Spending Stats:

  • Costco                                                        $75.00
  • Happy Hour                                                 $0.00
  • Dinner and Sweet Tooth Soothing             $0.00

Total Spent on Friday:                  $75.00

Estimated Total Friday Savings:                  $55.00

SATURDAY

Sat-Sarahwhich

Sat-baseball

Saturday morning I woke up with a sore throat (yay!) and powered through my morning with a green smoothie and some coffee. I was planning on heading to some soccer games, but they were cancelled because this monsoon season has been off the chain! The wind gusts were so intense the airport was even shut down for a bit. Anyway, back to me J I made the most of my morning at home catching up on blog stuff, budgeting, and laundry. Then for lunch, I made both Joe and I the infamous “Sarahwich”—a delicious sandwich (invented by the bestest roommate, friend, and late night chef—dubbed Sarah, obviously) that consists of fillings of your choice and is characterized by a crispy grilled finish highlighted with garlic, parmesan, rosemary, and thyme.  He ate his before mine was off the griddle. No joke.

Saturday afternoon I squeezed in a workout at home while catching up on the Season Premiere of Scandal (Team Jake!). Late in the afternoon, a couple of friends that had gotten free tickets to the Diamondbacks game through work decided last minute that they didn’t want to go, so they gave their tickets to me and Joe. Even though I had to pay for parking (it was only $10), we were able to enjoy the game from the upper deck without having to purchase tickets! Once we were in, I got us each a hot dog, and my handsome bought my beer. Following the game we went out to a local bar to meet some friends for darts, and while there Joe and I split a chicken finger basket and he bought me one more little girl beer. I’m not a fan of being sick for extended periods of time, so I kept the alcohol to a minimum and did my best to stay well hydrated.

Saturday Spending Stats:

  • Lunch                                                                               $0.00
  • Workout                                                                           $0.00
  • Diamondbacks – Tickets                                                 $0.00
  • Diamondbacks – Parking and Food                              $21.00
  • Drinks and Darts with Friends                                       $3.00

Total Spent on Saturday:              $24.00

Estimated Total Saturday Savings:              $43.00

SUNDAY

Sun-Shopping

Sunday started with a couple of quick errands shortly after waking up. First I stopped by Wal-Mart to get the crate and body wash pictured above. I’m hoping that by the end of next weekend my crate will look like the DIY Rustic Rolling Crate (minus the roll) that Liz Marie (Liz Marie Blog) created and shared a couple of weeks ago! I also left the Equate body wash in there because I wanted to share that I sacrificed by snobby body wash needs by purchasing this “off brand” instead a recommendation I’d dreamed about read about on another blogger’s site. Body wash is just not what I’m treating myself with these days. Plus, Joe and I can share this one. After Wal-Mart, I made a short grocery trip to stock up on weekly essentials and skipped out on a few items I wanted (oatmeal, honey crisp apples, granola bars).

Then I headed home and spent an embarrassingly long time on the couch watching Netflix and following the advice of YouTube videos that instructed me on techniques to reduce my sinus pressure…Very exciting stuff folks. I rounded out the night making a double batch (one for Sunday’s dinner and one to freeze for later) of this Creamy Tomato Lasagna Florentine from Pinch of Yum (highly recommended), snuggling on the couch, and then cozying up in bed with my newest page turner—well technically a page swiper because it’s on my kindle app—The Taking (Tales of Malstria Book 1). I can’t put it down! It’s available on Amazon and it’s only $6.00 :)

Sunday Spending Stats:

  • Breakfast/Coffee                                                 $0.00
  • Wal-Mart                                                           $16.00
  • Grocery Run                                                      $20.00
  • The Taking (Tales of Malstria Book 1)                $6.00

Total Spent on Sunday:           $42.00

Estimated Total Sunday Savings:           $30.00

Total Estimated Weekend SPENDING:         $141.00

Total Estimated Weekend SAVINGS:         $128.00

My weekend was the perfect combination of rest and recreation. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a nice balance like that, so you can bet I soaked it up! I hope everyone enjoyed the first weekend of fall–how did you save and still have a good time?

Sunday 9-8

I feel like I should have started this post with a  warning like “Reader Beware: Very Boring Weekend Recap Ahead” because it may rank up there in the top 5 most boring weekends of my life. Unfortunately, I was not feeling top notch on Saturday (I suppose it was bound to happen given that I am surrounded by children all day at work…and lately it seems like I’ve been surrounded by more sniffling noses as well), so that day was a bust. Sunday was spent catching up on chores and prepping for a busy work week. I know I’ll be happy with myself and realize it was worth it once Wednesday rolls around…It will be worth it…It will be worth it…

Hope everyone else had a weekend that was far more exciting than mine! Did you save some money and manage to have a good time? We want to hear about how you did it!!
